HOW I WENT FROM ZILCH TO OWNING SHARES
My name is Collins, I’m 20. Don’t be deceived by the topic, I am not a rich man, atleast not yet. Infact, my bank account currently reads 0.00, zilch 😢. Why? I spent the last cash paying for a course on Udemy.
In December of 2016, when I was 19 and naïve, I tinkered day and night about what path I would tread, what life after school had planned for me (I was in my third year in the University). I was a non-techie then but my friends, Chris and Gregory already had their passions well spelt out. One is a software developer and the other, a UX designer respectively.
One sunny afternoon, Chris hinted me about an opportunity open to undergrads and fresh graduates for a Content Writer role with Hotels.ng. I didn’t even know what ‘content writer’ meant back then, all I knew was I could write, but that didn’t stop me, I applied. Two weeks later, I got an email which contained an invitation for an interview, I was overjoyed because it came as a shocker. Eventually, I was given the job, out of over a 100 applicants and there my journey began.
I spent hours and late nights reading and watching not just content writing but also business and entrepreneurship centered articles, videos, posts, etc. The fever got me and I lost it, I just couldn’t stop. I kept munching article after article and going deep, deeper and even further.
Months down the line, a new bug bit me with a venom so toxic I couldn’t resist, I had to yield. That bug was ‘digital marketing’. I finally found my passion. Researching about the field gave me great insight and I knew I was home. Sorry to bore you with my epistle😇, promise I’ll soon be done.
Months later, I became a certified Digital Marketer and now, I help brands leverage opportunities that abound online to grow their visibility and revenue. It didn’t end there, a client found me on LinkedIn and reached out, he needed to create awareness for his company to increase visibility and subsequently conversion. I sent him a marketing plan and few days later, he called up stating that instead of a one-off payment, he would offer me shares to join their team, isn’t that cool 😎 and you know what’s way cooler, it’s remote working all the way. After much thought and consultations, I gladly accepted because I believe future gains are way better than present gratification.
My plan for 2018 is to delve into business development, product management and oh yeah, hope to get a new laptop too because the current one is being held together by cellotape😱. How I plan to achieve these, I don’t know yet but I sure would try.
If I can achieve all these in one year whilst still schooling, then what’s your excuse. Get off your high horse or is it your lazy butt and get doing. 2018 is for the taking and no one is going to do it for you. Come on! Let’s break grounds together. Let’s be shameless.
